Surfing in San Juan del Sur

The southwest Pacific coast is Nicaragua's surf region: warm water, offshore morning winds in the dry season, and breaks for first lessons through heavier reef and point waves. San Juan del Sur bay itself is the easy start. The beaches north of town, and the Popoyo and Tola coast that we group with this region, are where most schools and board rentals actually operate.

Start in the bay if you have never stood up, then look north to Maderas, Marsella, Remanso, and Hermosa, or farther up the Tola coast to Popoyo, Santana, and Colorado. Schools in town and on the beaches rent boards and run lessons by the hour. The dry-season morning is the lesson window; the afternoon onshore wind is when most people stop. Reef breaks are not the first-day spot. Say you are new.
