Fishing in San Juan del Sur
Nicaragua fishes two completely different ways. On the Pacific, pangas and sport boats look for sailfish, dorado, tuna, and roosterfish. On Lake Nicaragua, the day is about guapote and other lake fish among the islets, with calmer water and a shorter ride from town. Either way, agree the full price before you board: captain, fuel, ice, tackle, and what happens if the wind shuts the trip down.
San Juan del Sur is the offshore base: boats leave the bay for sailfish and dorado, and smaller pangas fish roosterfish and snapper closer to the rocks. The Tola and Popoyo coast, including Playa Gigante and El Astillero, is part of this region for now. December to April is the usual offshore window. Inshore trips run more of the year. A town shop is the place for lures and line if you are fishing the beach, not hiring a captain.
