Wildlife & nature in Granada
Wildlife on this coast means dry tropical forest, howler monkeys in the islets, birds on the lake and the peninsula, and — in season — sea turtles on the beaches south of San Juan del Sur. Reserves such as Mombacho have their own rules and a gate. Turtle walks are seasonal and should be done with a permitted group, not as a freelance night drive. We do not publish nest locations.
The Isletas are the easy wildlife hour: herons, cormorants, and howler monkeys if the boat goes slowly enough. Mombacho is the forest walk, with a gate and a list of rules. Laguna de Apoyo is birds and a quiet lake, not a zoo. Butterfly gardens and small rescues, when listed, should be explicit about whether animals are caged. We would rather show a reserve than a photo prop.

When can I see turtles?
In season, at night, south of San Juan del Sur, with a permitted group. We do not publish nest spots. Outside those months, do not expect a turtle.
Where are the monkeys?
Howler monkeys are the usual sight on a slow Isletas boat and in the forest reserves. They are not a guarantee.
Are animals in enclosures?
A reserve should be a trail, not a cage. If a listing is a rescue or a garden, the card should say so. Prefer the trail.
